Chinese Dazhong Cancels Merger Deal with China Paradise
August 18, 2006
Beijing-based home appliance retailer Dazhong has unilaterally terminated a merger agreement with Shanghai-based China Paradise, claiming the merger between China Paradise and the leading Chinese appliance retailer Gome violates the terms of the original agreement. China Paradise paid Dazhong 150 million RMB (US$18.8 million; US$1 = 7.9 RMB) for the right of first refusal in April, and now it remains pending whether Dazhong should return part or all of the cash deposit. Though canceling the merger deal with China Paradise, Dazhong does not preclude any chance of cooperation with other companies. US Best Buy and Jiangsu-based Suning are currently among the contenders in pursuit of Dazhong.
